BLUE ATLANTIC PORT SERVICES PROJECT
The Port Authority of Las Palmas participates as a member of the European Project Blue Atlantic Port Services, dedicated to carrying out a series of pilot tests, dissemination actions and technical studies which aim to boost the preparation of facilities for the reception and treatment of ballast water and other types of waste products in the ports of the Atlantic Arc, in the framework of the adoption of the international IMO Convention for the control and management of ballast water and sediments from ships. To carry out the actions foreseen in the project, a budget of 3 million euros has been estimated, co-funded by the European funding programme FEDER: INTERREG ATLANTIC ARC, from which a quantity of € 146,000 has been assigned to the Port Authority of Las Palmas.
The project began in September 2017, and is scheduled to finish its activity in April 2020. The Brest Chamber of Commerce and Industry coordinates this initiative, which has the participation of another 14 members, among which are the Port Authority of Seville, the Port Authority of Gijón, the Port of Cork, and the Port of Madeira.
Included in the scope of the project is the performance of a pilot test in the Port of Las Palmas, the objective of which is to check the latest technologies for the treatment of ballast water. The services operator TRANSVIRGINand the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will collaborate alongside the Port Authority of Las Palmas in the performance of these real tests.
